What Is Kundan Style Jewelry? A Simple Guide

Some necklaces look like they have a story: stones set close together in gold, pearls swinging below, a glow that seems to come from inside the piece. That look has a name. It is called kundan.

Kundan is a traditional Indian jewelry technique in which stones are set into gold foil. Kundan style jewelry recreates that look with different materials. Studio Fay pieces are kundan style: premium fashion jewelry with a gold tone finish, simulated gemstones and simulated pearls. Here is what the difference means, and how to wear it.

What Is Kundan Jewelry?

Kundan is a traditional Indian jewelry technique. Instead of building a separate frame around each stone, the jeweler sets the stones into a bed of gold foil. The stones sit close together and flat against the surface, with very little visible metal between them. That is why classic kundan necklaces look so full and so glowing.

The technique is old. It is believed to have begun in the royal courts of Rajasthan, and it flourished under Mughal patronage. Jaipur has long been known as a center of kundan work.

Kundan vs Kundan Style: What Is the Difference?

Traditional kundan is made by hand with gold and genuine gemstones, which makes it a precious, special purchase. Kundan style is different. It borrows the look, meaning the closely set stones, the floral and medallion shapes, and the pearl and bead drops, and recreates it as fashion jewelry.

At Studio Fay we are always clear about this. Our pieces are kundan style, never traditional kundan. They are artificial fashion jewelry with a gold tone finish, simulated pearls and simulated gemstones, made to be worn, loved and photographed.

How to Spot the Kundan Look

  • Closely set stones with very little metal showing between them
  • Floral and medallion shapes in a warm gold tone
  • Pearl and bead drops that sway when you move
  • Jewel colors such as ruby red, emerald green and jade green

How to Wear Kundan Style Jewelry

Kundan style pieces are made to be the star of the outfit, so give them room.

  • Start with a solid-color outfit. A plain black dress or a kurta in one color lets the stones do the talking.
  • Pick one star. If the necklace is bold, wear the matching earrings and keep everything else simple.
  • Try earrings first. If a full necklace set feels like a lot, one pair of statement earrings is an easy way in.
  • Let the gold tone work for you. It looks warm with ivory, black, deep green and burgundy.
